Conferences
SIMS held its inaugural conference in Spring 1998, and its success
has inspired us to continue with annual two-day conferences on different
themes. Our 1998 effort, the "Second Wave Conference" focused
on southern economic development between 1940 and 1960, a critical period
in southern life during which World War II and post-war development
jumpstarted the South's industrial economy and began to transform the
region. The University of Georgia Press is publishing a collection of
the best essays from the conference, which will be part of the Press's
new book series, Economy and Society in the Modern South.
