Our Director: Douglas Flamming
The director of SIMS is Douglas Flamming, Associate Professor of History,
whose work focuses on the dynamics of American regionalism. His award-winning
book, Creating the Modern South: Millhands and Managers in Dalton,
Georgia, 1884-1984, explores in detail and over long duration the
social consequences of industrialization in a southern mill town. He
is currently finishing a book manuscript on African American migration
from the South to the Far West. Entitled, "A World to Gain: African
Americans and the Making of Los Angeles, 1890-1940," this project
began when he was on the faculty (for nine years) at the California
Institute of Technology. His future work will focus on the South in
the post World War II period. In particular, he plans a book entitled
"Dixie's Vietnam," which will explore the economic, political,
and cultural impact the Vietnam War had on the American South. Flamming
devotes much of his time to SIMS, especially in the areas of fund-raising,
program-building, and outreach.
